Levelhead
I worked on this project as a designer at Tallwave from 2016-2017. Levelhead is a guided meditation and mobile learning application geared towards companies and their employees. This client came to us with hundreds of pages of content in the form of meditation lessons with different themes and separated by categories.
Employees
For employees, the app needed to be easy to access while working, and not feel like a distraction or something that would add to their workload.
Companies
For employers, the app needed built-in feedback mechanisms for tracking employee morale, as well as a content management system to cater specific content to their teams.
The Team’s Responsibilities
We created an application to deliver our client's meditation lessons and other content.
We developed a unique brand identity for our client and applied it to all aspects of their product and other materials.
We helped them come up with a strategy to navigate the mobile learning and corporate wellness markets.
My Role as a Designer
Participating in ideation workshops and sketching out ideas
User interface and component design
Working with an artist to align the visual design with unique illustrations
Prototyping the core loop of the application for testing and feedback
Presenting designs directly to the client for feedback
Working with developers to audit the working product against the intended designs
Content Hierarchy
The Levelhead team came to us with their meditation content already organized in to three levels. The largest modules are called “Tracks” and contain content with consistent themes. Each Track contains groups of exercises called “Sessions”. Sessions are groups of exercises with similar themes such as breathing or daily routines. Each Session contains three exercises. Once a user has finished the third exercise, they are taken to the first exercise in the next Session.
Home and Tracks
The home screen was designed so that users have quick access to the next exercise as well as all the other available Tracks. Although exercises are designed to be listened to in a recommended order, users can skip around or go back to exercises they enjoy.
Sessions
Sessions were designed to allow users to preview exercises before starting them. This includes information about length of time and posture so that the user can decide whether or not they’re in the right environment to start.
Exercises
Guided lessons in the form of audio tracks take between three and five minutes to complete. Lessons can be paused or re-wound in case the user needs or wants to hear it again.
Exercise Types
Audio exercises are the most common form of lesson within the app, but lessons were also designed for text-only as well as video content.
Gamification
We ideated different gamification features and produced usage stats, levels, and achievement badges to engage with employees and encourage them to keep going.
We included a way for users to send their peers words of encouragement along with award “Stickers” to emphasize team values.
Stickers
Dozens of Sticker icons were custom illustrated by a local artist. Icons were designed to be both unique and re-configurable. Sticker titles can be tailored for different teams through Levelhead’s CMS platform to reflect team values.
Survey
We designed several types of survey and feedback screens to prompt the user at different points within the app such as when a user completes an Exercise, after a Session, or once a Track is completed.
Retail
We designed a version of the app for users outside of companies. Our design provided different options for unlocking content based on how much the user wanted to pay and allowed them to try Tracks before purchasing them.
